The Sustainable Berkeley Lab team monitors the Lab’s energy and water consumption throughout the year, to ensure energy- and water-saving measures are preserved, pursue new ones, take action on potential issues, and evaluate progress toward targets.
Water highlights include —
- Water consumption for the first half of 2024 was 17% lower than the same period last year.
- Water consumption in FY23 was the lowest ever since measurement began in earnest in 2007
- The Lab met its 2025 goal (a 36% reduction in water use intensity – water consumption per square foot) two years ahead of schedule.
Energy highlights include —
- Energy savings are holding steady
- Additional conservation measures are planned for continual annual progress
- More long-term savings are planned to come from new efficient buildings and electric retrofits of existing buildings
